Flamingoes at the old salinas

The abandonded salt ponds, or salinas, on Grand Turk provide feeding grounds for wild flamingoes.

In the 1670s Bermudian settlers began harvesting salt. These "salinas" are the artifacts of that era. Of course, the salt brought a modicum of prosperity, which brought an interest from other nations. Ultimately, control of Grand Turk was variously in the hands of the Jamaicans, the Spanish, the French and pirates.

Today the English rule.
