I moved away from my 16 mm lens and tried a 60 mm on our last dive at Darwin's Arch, hoping to get up close to these magnificent sharks.

I was skeptical that this lens choice would be adequate in this turbid water. I believed that I must use a wide lens and work closely as possible to the animals in order to keep less of the muddy water from between my subject and lens.

Turns out I was wrong. Although the flash did not bridge the distance well, the natural light was more than adequate and the more compressed perspective made this among my favorite images of the trip. Certainly, it evokes more accurately for me the feelings I felt during the Darwin Island dives.
