Scrawled Filefish
We found this scrawled filefish on the deep reef at Shark Shoals. Generally a pretty wary fish, I was able only to grab a quick snapshot of this small one. They can grow to three feet and are extremely unusual looking in both shape and color patterns. I can only guess what survival advantage these peculiar features serve, maybe to help it blend with its environment.
